Growth Happens When You Sleep, Right?

We did a lot of sleeping today.  Well and a lot of eating. I'm guessing surpassing 2 pounds will happen  tomorrow.  Today I decided to not use the heat lamp.  He remained comfortable; stretched out and relaxed. He is getting up on his feet a little bit in the front.  It only lasts for so long and then he literally falls to sleep.  He got some cuddle time with Drew this afternoon and got sniffed by Roady - much to Roady's disgust - it was an accident.  Roady had come up to see Drew and didn't know Radar was laying on his chest :-)

One Week Old Today

Whew!  One week down.  I feel like I can relax a bit now.  Pixie is protective of him as she should be but not any more than before or than normal.  Anyone can pick him up under her watchful eye and Roady is allowed to walk by the box so long as he keeps on moving and doesn't pause to ponder the possibilities of actually getting close enough to sniff at the scary little beast.
Mini-Me.  To think that one day he will be bigger than her is amazing.  At the rate he is eating it wont be too long from now either.  He has gained a full pound since birth and his collar has been let out twice. He weighed in at 1.68 pounds today having gained 3+ ounces since yesterday. I'm going to have to get video of his oinking when he eats.  It's not synchronized with littermates which is always interesting to hear but it is pretty cool anyway. I don't think he is going to have any trouble handling his cousins' size when he meets them in a bit over a week. http://fawavizslas.com/FAWA_Kai&Bud_puppies.html

He likes to rest his head on the various lumps and bumps under the bedding.  Funny, he looks much cuter in real life than in this picture.  I'm doing something odd with my pictures.
I did nails again last night with clippers.  I think I'll try alternating between clippers and grinders for future trimmings.  It sure would be nice to be able to grind them down so they would permanently stay short.  As much as i love short nails i hate doing them.  It's time for the big ones to be done again!  Never ending!

Slow Couple of Days

When I work the weekend things are going to be quiet but that seems to be just what Pixie needed.  She has settled completely into the sleep upstairs at night and then comes downstairs for day time routine.  Henry said he didn't get much sleep on Saturday b/c of Radar's squeaking and Pixie's restlessness but apparently last night was much better.  I think he is just getting used to the normal squeaking vs the ones that need attention.  It always takes some adjusting.

Sunday morning after work I slept on the cot next to the whelping box so I could keep an eye on them.  Radar came up for a little cuddle time while Pixie looked on to make sure I didn't make him squeak.

Pix is definitely feeling better.  Since yesterday she has started her normal barking and shoe carrying.  Her appetite is a bit better - not perfect but I'm hoping when the antibiotics are done that her appetite will go back to normal.  She is typically a good eater so it is a little disconcerting when she doesn't eat.

I've just today decided I can go to daily weighings.  He is gaining steadily and gains about 2+ ounces a day at this point.  His activity is great.  Lots of sleeping and eating.  He is a strong muscular pup that likes getting stroked especially around his face.  He kicks his little back leg when he gets stroked behind his ear.  I'll have to get some video of that soon.

Passing the 1 Pound Mark

A little more routine is settling in for Pixie. She is eating better though apparently she likes having a personal chef so lunch today was spaghetti w beef and red bell pepper sauce.  Yum yum!

His Lord and Master has passed the one pound weight mark!  He has gained over 8 ounces since his birth of Tuesday. He weighed in this afternoon at 1lb 2.37 ounces.  I also noticed this afternoon that his little ears are starting to get floppy and longer.  He is turning into a little vizsla. Those silky soft ears will be here in no time.

Radars visitors this morning included Krista, Andrew and Susan.  He showed off his superior eating and napping skills.  He is quite the champ.

Just Chllin'

Today we're just establishing more of a routine.  Mainly for Pixie.  Yesterday really upset her.  Sleeping upstairs for the first time, going to the vet, having her baby taken away and not having enough to do made her a little worried.

So last night upstairs to our sleeping rig; take Drew to practice; downstairs when I get back; go outside; eat a little; weigh the puppy; take her temp; change bedding if needed.  Today we had some visitors.  Caren, Lisa and Mom.  Pixie is eating a bit more but not like her usual self.  She is obviously feeling better since she decided to jump over the 2' side of the main box.  Goofy girl could have just pushed the gate aside.

Radar got his first dose of keifer this morning and seemed to enjoy it. He weighed in at 15.25oz this am but I think that might have been off a bit b/c he weighed the same this afternoon.

Since Pixie is feeling better there are speed bumps in the box under the top blanket along with the "littermates" that are in there for Radar.  All of this is to make Radar have to work harder for what he wants....MILK! and to make him use more muscles so he doesn't become a baby moose.

A Mildly Traumatic Day

Today Radar had his tail docked and dewclaws removed.  While he only complained very briefly - about as long as it took to stop holding him still - Pixie was NOT happy that her baby was taken away.  Last night we started sleeping upstairs in our night time accommodations. Pix was a little stressed that her puppy could be moved from here to there but she settled in once the lights went out.

For now I'm taking weights three times a day. I like these charts so I thought I'd do one for Radar.  In a few days I'll only take a weight daily and then weekly. I'll post a new one every few days.

The Grand Poobah Has Arrived!

After a very unusual labor which culminated in a C-section we have one beautiful little boy born July 31st at 9am.  Radar weighed in at 10.5 ounces at birth.  He has since been greeted by his entourage:  Mom, Krista, Lisa, Wendy, Terri, Jenny and of course Drew and Henry.  Roady, Rocket, and Trooper have been allowed to look from afar but there will be no getting next to her baby according to Pixie!

Radar has gained over 2 ounces since birth, has had his nails cut and has spent his first 24 hours lounging around with him mom, eating, sleeping and complaining when he gets turtled between one of the walls and a lump under the blanket or Pix.

Pixie is doing well. I am extremely fortunate to have her. She is sore but eating anything that isn't kibble very well.  She will begrudgingly go outside for a little walk about in the back yard and to potty. then it's lickity-split back to his lord and master.  I've started applying ice to her first several teats and she will wear an ace wrap for a bit to encourage the eating machine to use the back teats.  I'm hoping to avoid mastitis from excess milk production.

I don't think he can be clean enough for Mom!
