Passing the 1 Pound Mark

A little more routine is settling in for Pixie. She is eating better though apparently she likes having a personal chef so lunch today was spaghetti w beef and red bell pepper sauce.  Yum yum!

His Lord and Master has passed the one pound weight mark!  He has gained over 8 ounces since his birth of Tuesday. He weighed in this afternoon at 1lb 2.37 ounces.  I also noticed this afternoon that his little ears are starting to get floppy and longer.  He is turning into a little vizsla. Those silky soft ears will be here in no time.

Radars visitors this morning included Krista, Andrew and Susan.  He showed off his superior eating and napping skills.  He is quite the champ.

Just Chllin'

Today we're just establishing more of a routine.  Mainly for Pixie.  Yesterday really upset her.  Sleeping upstairs for the first time, going to the vet, having her baby taken away and not having enough to do made her a little worried.

So last night upstairs to our sleeping rig; take Drew to practice; downstairs when I get back; go outside; eat a little; weigh the puppy; take her temp; change bedding if needed.  Today we had some visitors.  Caren, Lisa and Mom.  Pixie is eating a bit more but not like her usual self.  She is obviously feeling better since she decided to jump over the 2' side of the main box.  Goofy girl could have just pushed the gate aside.

Radar got his first dose of keifer this morning and seemed to enjoy it. He weighed in at 15.25oz this am but I think that might have been off a bit b/c he weighed the same this afternoon.

Since Pixie is feeling better there are speed bumps in the box under the top blanket along with the "littermates" that are in there for Radar.  All of this is to make Radar have to work harder for what he wants....MILK! and to make him use more muscles so he doesn't become a baby moose.

A Mildly Traumatic Day

Today Radar had his tail docked and dewclaws removed.  While he only complained very briefly - about as long as it took to stop holding him still - Pixie was NOT happy that her baby was taken away.  Last night we started sleeping upstairs in our night time accommodations. Pix was a little stressed that her puppy could be moved from here to there but she settled in once the lights went out.

For now I'm taking weights three times a day. I like these charts so I thought I'd do one for Radar.  In a few days I'll only take a weight daily and then weekly. I'll post a new one every few days.

The Grand Poobah Has Arrived!

After a very unusual labor which culminated in a C-section we have one beautiful little boy born July 31st at 9am.  Radar weighed in at 10.5 ounces at birth.  He has since been greeted by his entourage:  Mom, Krista, Lisa, Wendy, Terri, Jenny and of course Drew and Henry.  Roady, Rocket, and Trooper have been allowed to look from afar but there will be no getting next to her baby according to Pixie!

Radar has gained over 2 ounces since birth, has had his nails cut and has spent his first 24 hours lounging around with him mom, eating, sleeping and complaining when he gets turtled between one of the walls and a lump under the blanket or Pix.

Pixie is doing well. I am extremely fortunate to have her. She is sore but eating anything that isn't kibble very well.  She will begrudgingly go outside for a little walk about in the back yard and to potty. then it's lickity-split back to his lord and master.  I've started applying ice to her first several teats and she will wear an ace wrap for a bit to encourage the eating machine to use the back teats.  I'm hoping to avoid mastitis from excess milk production.

9th Week

Why are we still taking these kinds of pictures?  That is because Pixie isn't cooperating.  Poor Krista came on a false alarm form IN to see the whelping and here is what Ms. Pix looked like last night....
What a goofy way to rest.
So the pups are moving around like happy little clams in there.  Pixie woke up this morning at about 540 to fluff her bed and then promptly went back to sleep.

Final Stretch

Taking temperatures three times a day.  Oh can you imagine how much Pixie just loves that.  Actually it's not too bad b/c she gets cookies afterward! The have been holding at anywhere between 99.6 and 101.4.Still too high plus she doesn't look any different.  When I look back on notes from the last litter her backbone started to show a couple of days before hand and so far there are no bones on showing *anywhere*!

They are moving all of the time now.  Busy little beasts will be coming!

8th Week

Call me a slacker for not getting a post made on Monday but I did work two nights before and the night of Monday.  Went to a vet appt for the xray on Monday and have set up the whelping box, started taking temps and have the cleanest, shiniest, prettiest floors in the western hemisphere.  Well, probably just on my street :-) Today I'll take the dogs for a run, grind nails, clean the fish tank and maybe think about getting rid of the pile of laundry - again.  One more night of work tonight and then I'm off for the next week waiting for the pups to arrive!

I didn't get a copy of the xray sent to me or remember to take a camera with me to take a picture but we only saw 3 on xray.  Ms. Piglet, or Pixie as she is generally called in her slender life, has actually gained 9 pounds!  So if when the little babes arrive there are actually only 3 she has some weight to lose.  Generally, you can figure 2 pounds per puppy so there is the possibility that there is another hiding in there.

Another picture!?!?!  I'm so done with this!

Uncle Rocket is trying out the whelping box set up.  I think he likes it.
